Slices of yellow sheet cake with chocolate frosting topped with sprinkles on small octagonal plates surrounded by party blowers.

Yellow Birthday Sheet Cake with Chocolate Frosting

If I could only eat one cake for the rest of my life, I would pick this homemade yellow cake with fudge frosting every single time. It's got all those nostalgic yellow birthday cake vibes without any of the fuss. Just bake in a 13- x 9-inch pan, let it cool, and frost. No fussy decorating needed. This is a from-scratch cake well worth the (minimal) effort.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 cup salted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 1 cup whole milk

  • In the bowl of a heavy duty stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the butter and sugar at medium speed until light and fluffy.

  • Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.
  • Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  • Spread the frosting evenly onto the cake and decorate with sprinkles, if desired.
